Why Psychology For All

Approximately 1 in 5 adults - 57.8 million or 22.8% experience mental illness in a given year in the United States - and the same statistics are seen in North Carolina.

Over half of those experiencing mental illness are not receiving the mental health services they need, with half of those reporting financial constraints as the primary reason.*

Testimonials

My involvement in PFA has given me a more in-depth understanding of how past traumas can continue to affect my life if I do not deal with them appropriately. I have also established coping methods that I can use in everyday situations. Having access to mental health services has not only helped me to improve my well-being, but it has also enabled me to communicate with my family members about the importance of taking care of one's mental health and that it is not stigmatizing to do so. PFA is different from other mental health services because there is less judgment, shame, and fear involved. With PFA, I feel like I am just a person who needs someone to talk to when I feel overwhelmed at times. - Tia

Working with PFA has enabled me to gain a better understanding of my mental disorder, and this significantly improved my quality of life. With the help of my psychologist, I gained a new sense of hope and confidence, I have improved my relationship with my parents, and I have begun a serious romantic relationship, something that was once unthinkable for me. Before, I felt guilty about my emotions, thought there, thought there was no way out, and that I would be stuck feeling that way forever. Now I realize that is not true. - Monserrate

My main reason for seeking out services with PFA was to try and find help to cope with trauma. As someone who suffers from a lot of personal distress, I believe that my needs have been met as the therapist I was matched with is helping me process my emotions thoroughly. By gaining access to mental health services, I have been paired with a licensed therapist who does not judge me and has provided me with strategies for coping when I am facing difficult situations. I am feeling more self-sufficient after working with PFA and now know that I have the resources I need to succeed. - Steph
