Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is Psychology For All?
Psychology For All (PFA) is a Charlotte based nonprofit organization committed to improving the emotional well-being of under-resourced adults living in the greater Charlotte-Mecklenburg area who are unable to access the psychotherapeutic services they need.  PFA matches applicants who are uninsured or underinsured and who satisfy low-income eligibility guidelines with an experienced clinician from a diverse group of local licensed psychological service providers.  Each participating clinician has committed to provide up to 8 counseling sessions to individuals identified by PFA for a discounted fee.  PFA pays the discounted fee to the participating clinician for up to 8 sessions per client.  A majority of clients matched by PFA are from racial, ethnic and/or gender minorities who suffer from poor mental health outcomes due to multiple factors, including lack of accessibility to quality mental health care services, cultural stigma surrounding mental health care, discrimination and overall lack of awareness about mental health.

2) How does the program work?
PFA matches each eligible applicant with a local licensed psychological services provider who has committed to charge PFA a discounted fee for his/her/their services.  PFA matches eligible applicants with providers based on individualized needs and the provider’s expertise.  Each eligible applicant may receive up to 8 counseling sessions from a participating provider for free.  PFA pays the participating provider directly for services provided.   Upon the recommendation of the participating provider, an additional 8 sessions may be offered with an out-of-pocket cost to the client of $20 per session.

Services are offered on a first come-first served basis.  If no participating provider is available, the eligible client will be added to the PFA waitlist and will be provided with a list of outside mental health care providers who may or may not have immediate availability.  The waitlist follows the first come, first served policy and an eligible applicant is called as soon as a participating provider becomes available.   Applicants who fail to meet the eligibility requirements will also be provided with a list of outside mental health care providers.

3) Who is eligible to participate in the program?
To participate in the PFA program, clients must meet the following criteria:
1. Must be over the age of 18
2. Must be uninsured or underinsured and financially disadvantaged as demonstrated by proof of household income
3. Be at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines and
able to provide proof of household income (tax return, Form W-2, paystub, proof of unemployment).
4. Reside in and be able to see a mental health provider within Mecklenburg county.
Potential clients can initiate a self-referral through completing the Application found on our website or can be referred by other organizations and mental health providers. Please refer to the Services page for more information.

4) How do I become a client?
To get started, you will need to submit the following information:
Complete and submit the PFA Client Application, found under the Services tab above. Provide proof of income (W2, last 3 pay stubs, etc.).

Once Psychology For All receives the client application, along with the necessary proof of income documents, the Clinical Services Committee will review your information. The review will take approximately 5 to 7 business days to determine if your needs can be best served in our program. You will be notified of your application status via email.

6) How long does the enrollment process take?
Once we have received your information, the Clinical Services Committee will review your forms and documents within approximately 5 to 7 business days. If you meet criteria, we will work on matching your needs to the right licensed mental health provider. If a licensed clinician is not available, you will be placed on a waiting list. All notifications of application status and progress will be via email or text. We will work as quickly as possible to ensure you are connected with a provider. Overall, the enrollment process can take up to a month. If your need is more urgent, please click on the Resource page for a list of organizations that can help you faster.

7) How much does the program cost?
This program is offered at no cost to the client. Psychology For All pays each provider $65 per session. However, if another 8 psychotherapeutic sessions are required based on the provider’s recommendation, the client is responsible for paying $20 per session directly to the clinician. Psychology For All will be billed for the remaining $45 per session.

8) How do I become involved with Psychology For All (PFA) as a clinician?
To get started, you will need to submit the following information:
1. Complete and submit the PFA Clinician Application that can be filled out online.
2. Provide proof of credentials (e.g. copy of licensure and/or certifications).
3. Provide a copy of liability insurance.

Once Psychology For All has received the application form along with the necessary documents, the Clinical Services Committee will review them. The Clinical Services Committee will take approximately 5 to 7 business days to review your information and determine if you are eligible to become a provider through PFA. Someone from the Clinical Services Committee may contact you to request an in-person meeting. You will be notified of your application status and progress via email or phone call. Once you are approved to be a provider with PFA, you will receive a welcome email and begin being matched with applicants whose needs match your area of expertise.
