Potential and Current
Clinician FAQs

Who is eligible to become a clinician with PFA?
Clinicians who are licensed to provide counseling or therapy in North Carolina are eligible to apply to join PFA’s clinician network. If you are an associate, your supervisor must also apply and be accepted into the network.

Can I provide virtual therapy, or do sessions need to be in person?
Clinicians may choose to offer virtual sessions, in-person sessions, or both. Clients are asked for their preference, and we make every effort to match them with a clinician who offers their preferred mode of therapy.

Is this a pro bono role or reimbursed?
Clinicians are paid at a contract rate of $75 per session.
  • The initial 8 sessions are fully covered by PFA.
  • If clients are approved for an additional 8 sessions, the client pays $20 per session, and PFA covers the remaining $55.
  • When clinicians have been with PFA for at least 3 years AND have seen 5 or more clients, the clinician is eligible for a rate increase to $100 per session. The analysis for the rate increase is done annually at the beginning of each calendar year.

Who does Psychology For All serve?
To qualify for services through Psychology For All (PFA), clients must meet the following criteria:
  • Be an adult (18 years of age or older)
  • Lack adequate insurance coverage (be uninsured or underinsured for mental health services)
  • Meet financial eligibility requirements, with an income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level
  • Reside in Mecklenburg County

How are clients matched with clinicians? What types of clients would I see?
Client-clinician matching is coordinated by PFA’s Executive Administrator and the Clinical Services Committee.
We match based on several factors, including:
  • Clinical specialization
  • Geographic location
  • (When possible) Cultural or ethnic background
Our clients commonly seek therapy for depression, anxiety, trauma, life transitions, and grief. We use your listed areas of expertise to ensure that referrals align with your professional focus.

How many clients or hours am I expected to commit to?
There is no minimum or maximum client requirement. You can accept as many clients as you’d like and always have the option to decline a referral. If you need to pause your availability or would like to request more referrals, simply contact the Executive Administrator ([email protected]) with your update.

How long does the application and approval process take?
We aim to complete the clinician application and approval process within two weeks. The exact timeline may vary depending on how quickly a conversation can be scheduled between the applicant and a member of the Clinical Services Committee.

What documentation or reporting is required?
Therapy sessions are confidential and HIPAA-protected. PFA only requires:
  • Invoices listing therapy dates for payment processing
  • Notification when therapy concludes (so we can send closing surveys to you and your client)
  • Extension requests, if additional sessions are needed, with a brief explanation for continued care
No progress notes or clinical documentation are submitted to PFA.

Are there professional development or networking opportunities?
Yes! We regularly share information about continuing education (CEU) opportunities and are exploring new ways to support and connect our clinician community. If you have ideas for professional development or networking events, we’d love to hear them.

Will I be listed on PFA’s website once approved?
Once approved, clinicians are featured on the “Our Clinicians” page of our website, where you may include a photo and professional bio. If you prefer not to be listed publicly, just let us know — your choice will be fully respected.
